In February 2021 we cupped through many Hunapu micro-lots, selected the top three lots, then had them custom blended at Bella Vista Mill. We did this to create a coffee that simply erupts with fruity sweetness. Fresh peaches, strawberry gummy candy and raw honey are the dominant flavors. The acidity is crisp and balanced, while the body is lush and full. This coffee is an excellent espresso, but shines as drip as well.
Hunapu is the historical Mayan name for one of the three volcanos, also known as "Vocan de Agua", that looms in the distance over the town of Antigua. The farms located on and around the volcano benefit from fertile, volcanic soil, a temperate climate and high elevations. This creates an idea scenario for growing coffee.
Hunapu coffee is a project developed by Luis Pedro Zelaya, a fourth-generation coffee producer and operator of the Bella Vista Mill. Many farmers located near and around the volcano bring their small lots of coffee, usually around 2-3 bags, to Bella Vista to be washed and processed. These tiny lots are then branded with the Hunapu name and the farmers are provided with a good price, which is fully traceable, as well as suppurt and agricultural advice from the Zelaya family.
