Upon brewing this coffee, a dynamic, layered sweetness overwhelms your palate with intense notes of blackberry, Coca Cola and strawberry jam. As it cools, look for lots of sugary sweetness, with a refreshing berry-like acidity. Dynamic and complex, this coffee is a real banger.
The Gaturiri Factory, located in the Nyeri region of Kenya, processes coffee from around 1,100 small producers. Gaturiri has gained a very good reputation for consistently producing top quality coffee with their emphases on cherry selection, proper washing and soaking and long, slow drying. We've purchased coffee from Gaturiri several years in row, and are always extremely happy with the results. This peaberry lot is no exception.
A note on screen size: The AA, AB and other grades used to classify lots in Kenya are an indication of screen size only, not an indication of cup quality. The AA grade in Kenya is equivalent to screen size 17 or 18 (17/64 of 18/64 of an inch) used at other origins. AA grades often command a higher price at auction even though this grade is no indication of cup quality. The AB and PB lots may score higher, as is true in the case of several Kenyan lots we cupped this year. PB is the smallest screen size, and is the result of a mutation where only one seed is inside the coffee cherry instead of two..
